Flashback Friday: The Making of “Open Ice”

If you had access to a world-class Subaru WRX STI rally car, where’s the first place you would take it? Some of us would bring it through the woods, and others might simply long for an open highway. But at Subaru Winter Experience, we think we’ve got the coolest (or at least coldest) answer of all: one of our purpose-built ice tracks!

During the inaugural Subaru Winter Experience, Subaru Motorsports USA brought two specially wrapped WRX STI rally cars from the team shop in Vermont out to Dollar Lake in Eagle River, Wisconsin. All four of the team’s 2018 drivers—Subaru Winter Experience founder Patrik Sandell, former Subaru World Rally Championship driver Chris Atkinson, 10-time United States rally champion David Higgins, and action motorsports legend Travis Pastrana—got behind the wheel, and the results were nothing short of a winter wonderland:

Subaru’s professional rally and rallycross drivers may have been showing off in the same race cars they’d drive in the American Rally Association later that season, but you’ll get the same feeling once you strap in at Subaru Winter Experience. Even the least experienced of our participants will feel the same kind of adrenaline rush behind the wheel in our fleet of Subaru vehicles. Be sure to watch “Open Ice” above and book your Subaru Winter Experience now to get your own taste of ice driving fun!

Each Subaru Winter Experience course gives drivers the opportunity to try out brand new Subaru WRX STIs, WRXs, and BRZs on Dollar Lake in picturesque Eagle River, Wisconsin. Each car is equipped with specially studded tires to handle driving on the ice, while Sandell and the world’s best instructors from DirtFish are on hand to guide participants every step of the way, no matter their skill level. Subaru Winter Experience made its debut in Winter 2018 and is preparing for its third consecutive year at Dollar Lake this winter, with each year bringing more drivers than the last.
